SEW Awesome Fabric Coops
Sew tempted once again from one of the Yahoo Fabric Coops…
How do I pass up this neat Diva knit print at only $4.75 a yard?
So you ask, “What is a fabric coop?” Well, basically it’s a group of fellow fabricholics like yourself who join together to purchase fabric by the bolt at wholesale prices. In addition to fabric, many of these coops offer sewing patterns, threads and other notions for sale.
Here’s how most Fabric Coops work:
- Coop Owner announces fabrics for sale and specific ordering details (closing date, price, expected arrival from Fabric Manufacturer) to Coop Members .
- Available fabrics are posted in Photos section.
- Prices include small fee to cover Coop Owner’s expenses.
- Coop Members place fabric orders in database.
- Coop Owner announces Fill List to fill up incomplete bolts.
- Coop Owner closes specific Fabric Database.
- Coop Owner requests payments from Coop Members.
- Coop Owner orders fabric from Fabric Manufacturers.
- Order is received from Fabric Manufacturer and cut.
- Coop Owner requests Shipping Payments from Coop Members.
- Once Coop Members pay for their Shipping, Coop Owner ships fabric.
Go to http://yahoo.com and search “fabric coop.”
Some of my favorite fabric coops:

Click to join happylegsfabricgroup
Fabric Coops are a great way to get fabric per yard at wholesale prices. I’ve participated in most of the Fabric Coops listed above and they have proven to be reputable.
Unfortunately, not all Fabric Coops are the same. Be sure to check out the message boards on each coop. If a particular coop is not very active or there are members who haven’t received their fabrics without explanation from the coop owner, be wary of placing orders.
The only downside of fabric coops is you must wait for your fabric. It can be as long as 3 months from the time you order your fabric until it arrives. But if you are willing to wait, you’ll be saving lots of money and have the opportunity to acquire more fabric for your dollar.
Happy Fabric Shopping!

Lisa

Fashion Design and Sewing Worksheet
(sketch by my 14-year-old daughter, Marielle)
Thought I’d share my current worksheet I use to streamline my design and sewing production of my boys’ clothing line.
Clothing Design and Sewing Sheet
I always attach a sketch or photo AND fabric swatches to each worksheet. It makes the process so much easier. This worksheet gets utilized for both custom orders and assembly-line sewing.
Once I start “real” production (manufacturing) for the wholesale market this coming year, this worksheet will change as there will be things which will have to be done differently.
Enjoy!

Lisa

SEW GIANT
Here in NYC, everything is GIANT
Mr. Diva™ and Most Wonderful Brother (aka Birthday Boy) have VIP tickets to tonight’s GIANTS vs. PATRIOTS football game…
directly at the 50 yard line in the first row!
CNN reported ticket prices for this non-playoff game are the highest ever…fetching between $1,500 and $2,200 a ticket on Ebay and Craigslist…looks like Mr. Diva scored,
But not to worry, I have plenty of GIANT leftovers…
2 1/2 pound Lobster Tails
and Prime Rib from The Palm to keep me busy.
Of course if I get really bored, I could always go fabric shopping…LOL!
Enjoy your day!
With friendship,
Lisa

SEWING ROOM ORGANIZATION CHALLENGE – PART VI – NOTION COMMOTION©
NOTION COMMOTION
In addition to your Sewing Room, any of these organization ideas can be used in your Craft Room, Scrapbooking Corner and/or Jewelry Making Studio. Get creative!
Ok…it’s time to get back to work! We have a few little things we need to still need to organize, so let’s get started.
CLOSURES
There are literally dozens of ways to fasten a garment or home décor item. Get yourself some clear containers or cheap photo boxes and start sorting your closures. Make sure you label each container and stack it on your shelves. Here’s how I divide them:
Buttons, Snaps, Eyelets, Grommets, Hooks and Eyes
ZIPPERS
Teresa Franco’s awesome zipper storage idea
You could also organize your zippers with safety pins, but instead put them on a tie rack:
Revolving Tie Rack from Harriet Carter
Just bought my husband this motorized revolving tie rack. Think he’d mind if I borrowed it for my ribbon? LOL
Brookstone Motorized Revolving Tie Rack
BUTTONS, SNAPS, EYELETS, GROMMETS, HOOKS AND EYES
There are literally hundreds of ways you can organize these small objects. I store my snaps and buttons in these See n Store magnetic containers:
I currently have 36 of these nifty containers and plan to add more as needed. They can be mounted on the wall or free-standing and in a variety of combinations:
5 Tin Magnetic Standing Storage at Organize.com
5 Tin Magnetic Hanging Storage at Organize.com
8 Tin Magnetic Standing Storage at Oriental Trading
Kamenstein Magnetic Spice Rack
Making Memories Modular Storage System
If you’re trying to keep costs down, Make Your Own Magnetic Storage Board. You only need FOUR things to make this quick and easy board to hold your sewing and craft notions:
1 -STEEL SHEET
- Sheet of 22 gauge steel (available pre-cut at most hardware stores)
- Do It Yourself’s 24″ x 12″ Steel Sheet
- Steelwork’s 18″ x 22″ Steel Sheet
- Steelwork’s 6″ x 18″ Steel Sheet
- Umbra’s Big Magnetic Strip
- Umbra’s Magnetic Board
- Spectrum Purple Magnetic Board
- Cynthia’s Magnet Boards
- Cookie Sheet
- IKEA 99 cent Magnetic Strip
- IKEA Magnet Board
2 – SMALL METAL CONTAINERS
- Grizzly Industrial’s Watchmaker Cases
- Lee Valley’s Watchmaker Cases
- Karen Smallbone’s Watchmaker Cases
- Specialty Bottle’s Tin Containers
- American Bridal’s White Tin Container
- EFavor’s Clear Top Tins
3 – MAGNETS
- Round Magnets
- Magtag Magnetic Squares
- Flexible Magnetic Sheets
- ProMAG Adhesive Magnet Rolls and Squares
4 – GLUE
- Crazy Glue™
- Hot Glue
Have your husband or dad drill four holes in the corner of the steel sheet/board for mounting, if desired.
Hang sheet/board on wall or store in drawer.
Glue a magnet to the back of each container. Let dry.
Stick magnetic containers to sheet/board. Done!
Martha Stewart adds Buttons to her Magnetic Containers
Add a photo to your containers if you’d like.

Lowe’s Magnetic Board Tutorial
Other clever storage ideas:
Deflecto Revolving Clear Storage at Shoplet.com
Economical Glass Jars by the Case
ArtBin 24 Compartment Slide ‘n Store
Snap or Button Organizer from Stacks n Stacks
You could also use a rail system installed on your wall:
and add the coordinating wire basket and/or containers:
I absolutely love my Deflect-o Tilt Out Storage Bins. They are my favorite storage system in my sewing room:
These bins come in all different sizes to suit your needs and lock together. They can be mounted on the wall or placed on a shelf:
Deflect-o Tilt-Out Clear Storage Bins at TheNerds.com
Deflect-o Tilt-Out Clear Storage Bins from Staples.com
ELASTIC, VELCRO AND SNAP-TAPE
With all the different sizes and applications, it is easy to accumulate a large “stash” of elastic. I sort my elastic into three stacked storage boxes:
Thin Elastic (includes elastic thread)
Foldover Elastic and Decorative Elastic
Waistband Elastic
Here’s my pink leather boxes (once again from Home Goods):
My Velcro and Snap-Tape are stored in similar leather boxes. Any type of storage container, box or drawer will work:
Clear Acrylic Stackable Storage Drawers
Foremost Modular Storage Drawer Cubes
You can cover these drawers with either fabric or paper and then use decoupage to seal them:
You can even make erasable labels on each drawer:
MARKING AND CUTTING IMPLEMENTS
Are you constantly trying to find your favorite scissor or disappearing (literally) marking pen? A great solution is to find some type of utensil caddy which can be placed on your cutting table and then moved next to your sewing machine when needed. I found this great revolving caddy (pictured above) at my local Home Goods store.
Check out your local office supplies store in their desk accessories aisle for lots of good ideas.
In this type of caddy, you can store:
- Scissors
- Rotary Cutter (check out these new Rotary Cutter Lights)
- Marking Pens
- Chac-o-Liner Marking Chalk
- Havel’s Amazing Seam Ripper
- Sewing Gauge
- Fabric Tube Turners
![]()
Prior to getting my neat revolving caddy, I used to store all my extra marking pens, scissors, tube turners, etc. in leather containers (also found as Home Goods). For the items I don’t want to keep on my cutting table, I use one of these nifty Tupperware Utensil Caddies:
Here’s a few more organizers to consider:
Rubbermaid Rotating Desk Organizer
Donna Dewberry Storage Spinner
Utensil Holder with Adjustable Dividers
If you don’t have the space on your cutting surface or it’s portable, consider hanging your cutting implements on the wall:
Tip: The height of your cutting surface is so important as to avoid an aching back. I use these under the legs of my table:
RULERS
I use a wire mesh letter holder from my local office supplies store to hold my rulers at the end of my cutting table. You can easily organize your rulers by either hanging them or standing them up like I do. Here are some ways to do it:
Quilting Ruler Organizer Shelf on Ebay
Stop your Ruler from sliding on fabric. I really works:
If you need a paper ruler to attach to the end of your table, here’s a free printable one. Consider sending this ruler link to those you sew for (family, friends, customers, etc.) to get easy measurements:
SEWING STATION
There are a few things I like to keep next to my sewing machines:
- Embroidery Scissors
- Thread Clippers
- Seam Ripper
- Stiletto or Sewing Awl
- Pins & Pincushion
- Tweezers for Serger Threading
- Lint Brush to clean machines
- Mini Screwdrivers
- Needle Threader and Inserter
- Thread/Scrap Catchers
- Sewing Machine/Serger Presser Feet
Get yourself a small bowl, container or divided tray (I use a dog dish…LOL) to keep all your necessary sewing supplies next to your sewing machine. You’ll be able to easily find what you need without going through drawers and cabinets.
Here’s some other ideas:
Make your own Sewing Station:
Sewing.org’s Sewing Station Tutorial
Consider purchasing sewing machine and serger cushioned pads (helps with machine vibration) and thread/scrap catchers:
Pedal-Sta’s Sewing Machine Pad w/ Thread Catcher
Clotilde’s Serger Pad and Thread Catcher
Pedal-Sta’s Serger Pad w/ Scrap Catcher
Pioneer’s Serger Pad Thread Catcher at Joann’s
Joann’s Sew Essential Scrap Caddy
You can also make your own:

SEWING MACHINE / SERGER PRESSER FEET
Do you always find yourself looking blanking at a strange sewing machine foot and wondering what on earth is its purpose? Well, then it’s time to sort through them. I have dozens of sewing machine and serger feet. I use a divided pink leather case to easily store my sewing machine feet. If you label each section, it will be easy to locate the one needed.
I keep my serger feet in a divided leather tray:![]()
You can use a cigar box (decoupage it with fabric):
Cigar Boxes on Ebay Express
or any divided box:
Clear Box with Moveable Dividers
Budget 12 Compartment Storage Case
and label it like Mean Jean did:
Mean Jean’s Presser Foot Organizer
You can even use a cutlery tray!
Expandable Bamboo Flatware Tray
A jewelry organizer will also work!
Jewelry Organizer at Stacks n Stacks
or Jewelry Case
You can also purchase a great “foot organizer” from your local sewing dealer or use clear baseball card plastic sleeve protectors in a regular binder:
Home Depot’s Sewing Notions Organizer
Nancy’s Notions’ Presser Foot Storage Cases
Or make your own:

PRESSING SUPPLIES
Keep a small shelf over your ironing board for your pressing supplies. This would include:
- Iron (if you store it after use)
- Mini Iron
- EZE-View™ Cotton Press Cloth
- Teflon Press Sheet
- Faultless Spray Starch
- Faultless Spray Sizing
- Water Spray Bottle
- Distilled Water
- Sleeve Board
- Tailor’s Board
- Pressing Ham (hung on my Iron Storage Caddy)
- Sewing Gauge
- Bamboo Point Turner and Creaser
- Ezy Hem Guide
- Hem Clips
- Iron Cleaner
- Water Refill Container
I keep two boxes next to my pressing station. One contains all kinds of fusible tape which I use when I’m taking sewing shortcuts…LOL. In the second box, I store my small pressing aids such as my Ezy Hem Guide, Iron Cleaner and Point Turner.
I hang both my Tailor’s Board and Sleeve Board on the wall next to my ironing board.
I purchased one of these Slim Drink Dispensers to keep water (holds a gallon!) next to my ironing board. It saves me dozens of trips back and forth to the sink to refill my iron!
You could also use a mounted peg board with hooks to hang all your pressing essentials.
MISCELLANEOUS SUPPLIES
I’m sure you have lots of other supplies which need to be organized and stored. The list seems endless…LOL! Here’s two more great storage ideas I came up with:
First, I re-purposed some doll accessory drawers. These drawers store my size labels, garment labels, bow-making clips, etc.
Next, I came across this neat piano-hinged box at TJ Maxx.
The front cover folds down to reveal my hot fix tool and glues. I glued a piece of cork board sheeting to the inside of the cover to make a nifty little bulletin board:
Since you’re nosey, here’s a close-up of my stickers:
You can get your own stickers here:
Hope your creative space is finally becoming a place to love to be in–not a dreaded space. If you have any ideas for additional sewing room organization topics, just email me!
Happy Sewing!

My Christmas Wish for My Daughter
I wish you warmth on cold days…
Dear friends who you can count on…
The ability to choose the right path…
The foresight to see things ahead…
The ability to overcome adversity…
Empathy for those who are suffering…
Strength to stand up for yourself…
If only I could wrap it all up for you, I’d put it all under the Christmas Tree.
With love,
MOM
Yes, all the gifts are for one special daughter who I love more than life itself. Forgive me…I have a habit of getting a little carried away when it comes to my Sunshine Girl.

Name My Serger Contest–Win FREE FABRIC!
All fabric are now folded…just need to store them. I’ll do that the day after Christmas–well, after I come home from the After Christmas sales…LOL!
I’m thinking it’s time once again to get rid of many of the fabrics that no longer put a twinkle in my eye. My tastes have changed as have my sewing business needs.
It feels good to have my cutting table clear again…oh, how I missed it!
By the way–do you name your sewing machines and sergers? Of course, I do…from Left to Right:
1- Rosie (Viking Rose)
2 – newer nameless Viking 936 serger (set up for 4 thread)
3 – Lulu (old Viking 936 serger set up for coverstitching)
4 – Martha (Viking Designer 1)
5 – Bertha (Viking 905 which I finally pushed it to the back of the table to make room for the other machines)
6 – Iris (Viking Iris).
So here’s a little contest to win some free fabric from me–NAME MY SERGER (#2)! You can post as many names as you’d like. I’ll pick a winner on December 31st!

The Domestic Disaster
Just Wave My Magic Wand
Am I the only one who is feeling like a Domestic Disaster™ during this holiday season? I had big dreams, but only a few came to fruition. And the reason why, you ask?
Not quite sure…
Maybe it was the Sewing Fairy™ who pulled a work slowdown,
because she had requested a gravity-fed iron
or perhaps she was pissed that she has no fabric stash
or she realized her sewing chair was too low to reach her sewing machine.
Ok. Back to my fantasy life…
Although I finished buying and shipping all necessary gifts, I still have over 100 gifts to wrap…and my gift wrap table is a disaster. So is my sewing room. At least the rest of my house is pretty clean (and decorated, too).
I thought my messy sewing friends would enjoy seeing why I fall short of diva status from time to time.
Now’s it’s real life time…
Many of you don’t know, but I’ve been living with Lupus for 22+ years. Most of the time it’s not a problem, but every once it a while it really slows me down–like for the last few days. Seems when I get stressed, my body just shuts down and it zaps me of all energy. Really bad timing!
So I rest until the guilt of seeing Mr. Diva™ step it up a notch starts to bother me. Honestly, he tries, but he’s not me. And my life (family, friends and home) want ME, not him.
Mr. Diva™ literally takes over running all the errands and finishing up whatever I can’t accomplish. He’s good like that. In the meantime, I rest until I gather up enough energy. So that’s where I am…slowly undertaking things that need to be done.
But not to worry, I’ve already finished putting away all the clothes and most of the fabric in my sewing room is now folded. That will leave me tonight to get all the gift wrapping done. Thank goodness for gift bags…LOL!

Also liking this one from the ‘Back in the Saddle’ collection by Anita Phillips for Wilmington Prints

SEW…How About Another MEME?
Stole this meme from Idea Girl with permission who stole it from Zandria who stole it from Kate who stole it from Jac–what criminals I tell ya…LOL! Feel free to do the same…
What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now?
Perlier Liquid Honey Miel Soap for me and Dial for Mr. Diva™ (and you thought he’d go for the honey one, didn’t you?).
Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator? Often–especially when I trying to score some Diva Points™ with Mr. Diva™!
What would you change about your living room?
Not much. It’s the one room I think I’m finished decorating. And it’s usually the cleanest room in the house as it’s the first one you see when you open the front door.
Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty? Clean. I usually turn it on as soon as I finish loading it…then I take the dishes out as I need them.
What is in your fridge? Vanilla Nut creamer, roasted peppers, milk, orange juice, fruit, Coke, ice tea, Sicilian cracked olives, Fresh salted Mozzarella cheese, Proscuitto di Parma, pasta, fresh meatballs, Champagne, wine, onions and garlic. And in the freezer, I only have ice pops and waffles. I don’t freeze meat, chicken or anything else.
White or wheat bread? Wonder White bread. And of course, a loaf of fresh Semolina bread everyday.
What is on top of your refrigerator?
Nothing…probably because it’s too high for me to reach.
What color or design is on your shower curtain?
Clear–but always pushed to the side to hide it when not in use. Our master bathroom has a 7′ x 5′ walk in shower. After pricing a custom glass door for it ($$$), I decided to hang a hidden curtain rod from behind the top of the wall…so clever, right?
How many plants are in your home? None at the moment. I usually buy some season live flowers such as paper whites, tulips, amaryllis, and daffodils.
Is your bed made right now? Yes.
Is your closet organized? Not yet, but I’ve been working on it for the last two weeks.
Do you drink out of glass or plastic most of the time at home? Plastic = no dishes. I’m not the greenest person out there.
Do you have iced tea made in a pitcher right now? Yes. And it has to be Lipton™.
If you have a garage, is it cluttered? At the moment, it is very cluttered as I have all my new industrial sewing machines and cutting tables being temporarily stored in there. Not to mention my huge candy cart, 5 hp soil tiller (in case I want to farm here in NYC), snow blower (used twice in 8 years), lawn mower (never used–thank goodness for lawn service) and Little Jedi’s Hummer Ride-on vehicle.
Curtains or blinds? Blinds on every window and curtains on some. Although I have the fabric for most of the curtains, I have yet to make them in the last 3 years.
How many pillows do you sleep with?
Two. Can’t sleep with just one.
Do you sleep with any lights on at night?
No. Just the television…and that’s because I always fall asleep watching it–I really do need to set the sleep timer, but can’t figure out how to use it.
How often do you vacuum?
Rarely. Cleaning girl does that. And for the in-between times, I just turn on my Roomba (robotic vacuum).
Standard toothbrush or electric?
Manual–although I do have one of those fancy smancy SonicCare toothbrushes.
Do you have a welcome mat on your front porch? Yes, but it doesn’t say, “Welcome.” It’s just there to whip your feet on before coming into the house.
What is in your oven right now? Clean broiler pan.
Is there anything under your bed?
No, it’s a platform bed.
Chore you hate doing the most?
Laundry…that’s probably why I sent the laundry out to be done…LOL.
What retro items are in your home? Lots of stuff.
Do you have a separate room that you use as an office? Yes. Actually, it’s in the basement next to my sewing room.
How many mirrors are in your home? Ten.
What color are your walls? Public spaces and Mr. Diva’s TV room are a warm terra cotta brown, master bedroom is an ochre faux finish, master bath and Little Jedi’s room are chocolate brown, Little Domestic Diva’s and first floor bathroom are lavender, Little Domestic Diva’s bathroom is medium pink, and main TV room is Martha Stewart green.
Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home? No…unless you consider my seam ripper and Gingher scissors weapons.
What does your home smell like right now? Gardenia and Tuberose.
Favorite candle scent? Trapp’s Fresh Tuberose.
Ever been on your roof? Yes, but only on the roof over my garden room–not the second story roof.
How many TVs do you have? Five.
How many house phones? Several, but most of them don’t work.
Do you have a housekeeper? Of course.
What style do you decorate in?
Tuscan Villa Transitional..yes, I made that term up.
Do you like solid colors in furniture or prints?
Both.
Is there a smoke detector in your home?
Yes. Both the battery operated ones and the central alarm system ones on each floor. I find them especially useful when Mr. Diva™ turns on the oven.
In case of fire, what are the items in your house which you’d grab if you only could make one quick trip? Purse, vintage tatting, computer, favorite sewing machine and serger.
With friendship,
Lisa
